Oregon’s hazelnut industry represents nearly all of the US domentic production. Market demand for hazelnuts is high, and has driven rapid growth of the hazelnut acreage resulting in thousands of acres of new orchard plantings. Flatheaded borers, principally Chrysobothris mali and C. femorata, have been devasting pests in new orchard plantings where borer attacks cause high levels of mortality in trees that are 1-2 years old. Attacks can also be problematic in older hazelnut trees, where they weaken or kill branches. This presentation will cover some of our long-term research on phenology of these pests to inform management, management tactics, and recent successes with rearing of these pests to better understand their biology.
