Student interests and attitudes about the natural world are changing. More than ever students enter college with a greater interest in conservation initiatives and preservation of natural environments.. With this shift in student interests, entomology courses can be refocused toward conservation and biodiversity and beneficial ways to look at insects. Additionally, instructors must reevaluate the benefits of insect collections toward student learning goals in a time when insect numbers are in decline. Here I will present my course goals for a general entomology course at Rutgers university with an emphasis on the student experience in regards to collecting, killing, and curating insects.
