In today’s evolving professional landscape, entomologists—whether early-career scientists or seasoned professionals—may find themselves facing unexpected career disruptions or uncertain job prospects. This talk will share one entomologist’s experience with involuntary unemployment and reflect on the challenges of navigating a difficult job market, the emotional toll of job loss, and the process of redefining professional identity. More importantly, however, this talk will offer practical advice for those who may be on similar paths: strategies for an effective job search, tips for networking beyond traditional academic circles, how to identify transferable skills, and ways to remain resilient and focused in the face of uncertainty. Drawing from both personal experience and insights gained from others in the entomological community, the session will emphasize that career paths are rarely linear—and that change, while difficult, can be an opportunity for growth.
