Improving microbial control strategies as tools for the biological control of insect pests

Entomopathogens, mainly entomopathogenic fungi and nematodes, are staples in many pest management programs due to several benefits, including their wide host ranges. Strategies involving the use of entomopathogens are therefore broadly applicable to cultivated crops of different production systems. Entomopathogens are proven management options for many pests, efficiently attack insects, and are ecologically friendly, making them favored alternatives to many synthetic options with non-target effects. As a naturally occurring phenomenon of pest management, to ensure consistency, entomopathogens are often adapted and enhanced for use in specific systems, such as orchards and row crops. Adaptations include mass production, formulations, and improved applications. Enhancements focus on integrating efficacy boosters, or strain improvements, to facilitate faster deployment of their ecological roles as microbial biological control agents. Combinations of both have led to further success in entomopathogen use and reduced reliance on synthetic options. This talk reviews recent approaches to utilizing entomopathogenic fungi and nematodes for pest management and ways to improve their use and consistency. By providing this outlook on the potential use of these alternative options, we hope to highlight new avenues for their use in effective pest management.
