Do Oklahoma's sand dunes harbor unique insect communities?

Oklahoma is home to several sand dunes and similar sandy habitats found across the state. This study aims to determine if these habitats host insect communities distinct from surrounding non-dune habitats. In the Summer of 2024, we collected insects representing broad functional groups from five dune sites in Oklahoma. Within each site we sampled dune-adjacent habitats, surrounding non-dunes, and transition zones between the two. Specimens were identified to the lowest taxonomic level, and species composition was compared across sites. We found several habitat specialists from adjacent dune habitats that were not found in non-dunes suggesting these habitats host unique species assemblages.
