New species of the Aphanogmus fumipennis group from New Hampshire (Hymenoptera: Ceraphronoidea)

Ceraphronoidea is a dark taxon including many ecologically and economically relevant species of parasitoid wasps. Aphanogmus is a poorly understood genus in which many species have historically been misclassified; this is in part due to focus on female specimens, which lack characteristics for easy species-level identification. A newer system based on male genitalia morphology is used herein to delimit three new species in the Aphanogmus fumipennis species group: Aphanogmus odiorniensis new species, Aphanogmus benjamini new species and Aphanogmus chandleri new species using synchrotron-based micro-CT and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Limits of the genus Aphanogmus and the fumipennis group are revised. The utility of micro-CT data in undergraduate education and training of the next generation of taxonomists is discussed, as well as the relevance of species discovery within dark taxa.
