One of the barriers students have to learning entomology and other scientific courses is the immense vocabulary required; this issue is exacerbated in cases where students only take one course in this field. It is important to use evidence-based, high impact practices and discussions of metacognitive techniques for students to increase their retention of this information. It is equally important for these activities to contribute to a fun and memorable course experience. I will discuss the use of alternative and easy activities for studying and using entomological terms and root words. This talk/activity will discuss approaches to help students retain the meaning of entomological terms. This includes activities such as cross words, game shows, and “Frankenstein Insects” activities. I will also share other resources and recommendations to help others develop their understanding of these complex scientific and taxonomic words.
