Feeding vibrations of Liriomyza trifolii on tomato plants and Diglyphus isaea host searching behavior

Liriomyza trifolii is a leaf-miner larva that causes severe leaf damage with a reduction of yield and quality in many crops, such as tomato. Biocontrol of L. trifolii is important to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides and protect crops. Diglyphus isaea is a parasitoid wasp particularly effective against leaf-miner larvae. The host-searching behavior of D. isaea involves the detection of chemical cues from damaged plant tissue. Moreover, some studies suggest that D. isaea may detect vibrational cues produced by larval movement within leaf mines. Feeding vibrations could be perceived by parasitoids (allodones) and used to precisely locate the host (echolocation), but little is known about the possible contribution of vibration detection in the host-searching behavior of D. isaea. The aim of this study was to characterize the feeding vibrations of L. trifolii larvae, their propagation on tomato tissues, and their role in host-searching behavior of D. isaea. The results will provide a deeper knowledge on feeding vibration propagation through a natural substrate and possible roles of substrate-borne vibrations in the host-searching behavior of D. isaea.
