Development of detection, monitoring, and management strategies for the pine bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) in Florida

The Pine bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) represent significant ecological, economical, and social challenges to pine forests and communities throughout the southeastern United States, particularly in Florida. Efforts to control the increasing infestation levels of the PBB have primarily relied on chemical pesticides. While this method can be effective in the short term, this contributes to environmental pollution, harming non-target species, degrading soil, and water quality. The major goals of this study were to develop suitable monitoring tools and management strategies for these beetles in Florida’s Panhandle. Specifically, the research evaluated the performance of four different traps including the Lindgren Funnel Traps, Clear Acrylic Trap, Funnel Jar Black Trap, and Blue Bucket Cover Trap, in capturing the PBBs and assessed their diversity and seasonal dynamics for a specific time period. The field experiments were conducted from July 8, 2022, to October 25, 2023, across three key sites in Leon and Gadsden counties in Florida, with traps set and beetles collected twice per week. The outcome of this study will be discussed.
