The systematics of ringtail dragonflies (Erpetogomphus selys 1858)

The genus Erpetogomphus (Selys 1858) comprises a distinctive group of clubtail dragonflies (Odonata: Gomphidae) commonly referred to as ringtails, which are diversely distributed in North America with ~ 24 species recorded. Despite detailed morphological classification, to date comprehensive molecular phylogenetic analyses of Erpetogomphus are lacking, hence our limited understanding of their evolutionary relationships. To address this gap, we aimed to use museum specimens to generate Anchored Hybrid Enrichment (AHE) data. We constructed both species and gene trees to better understand phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary history within the genus. Here we present the most comprehensive phylogenetic study of the genus Erpetogomphus to date, this research is contributing to a larger effort to resolve the Gomphidae phylogeny.
