Exploring resistance traits of Prunus rootstocks for management of peachtree borer (Synanthedon exitiosa) in peach

Peaches, Prunus persica (L.) Batsch, represent a major food crop in the southeastern United States. Peach production in the region is particularly constrained by a wood boring tree pest, the peachtree borer, Synanthedon exitiosa (Say) (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae). Peachtree borer damage was assessed in a field trial with two untreated rootstocks, Nemaguard, a commercial peach rootstock, and SL0040, a plum hybrid rootstock. It was found that Nemaguard had significantly higher peachtree borer damage compared to SL0040, suggesting the plum hybrid rootstock may impart a natural resistance to the pest. These results prompted our current study testing the efficacy of grafting peach scions onto potentially resistant rootstocks. This ongoing research evaluates the effectiveness of peaches “high-budded” onto a plum hybrid rootstock and a plum x almond hybrid rootstock as a potential management tactic for peachtree borer. This method will be compared to current standard grafting practices and evaluating borer attack.
