Best practices for safe and ethical student-centered entomological field work

Fieldwork is a cornerstone of entomological research, providing critical data on insect biodiversity, behavior, ecology, and population dynamics. However, conducting fieldwork presents unique ethical and safety challenges that demand careful consideration. Further, the field represents a substantial deviation from the traditional academic environment including physical and psychological challenges. Here, I present recommendations for planning, conducting, and leading student-centered fieldwork. Key topics include considering diverse experiences in the context of current environments, minimizing environmental impact, ensuring the welfare of students, respecting local communities and indigenous knowledge, and adhering to field safety standards. The session is especially relevant for teachers and researchers committed to conducting fieldwork that is not only scientifically robust but also socially and ethically sound.
