Insects can invade postharvest or stored products readily from immediately after harvest to bulk storage and retail spaces. Protecting these commodities ensures safe and nutritious food and defends the time and money already invested. Early warning systems of insect infestations can offer more targeted and timely intervention from managers and provide significant savings of potential losses. Using image-based, acoustic, or volatile sensor systems, data can be classified and analyzed in real-time and fluctuations can be addressed through remediation or enhanced monitoring efforts. The foundational research of the last several decades surrounding the use of sensor systems has provided the groundwork for incorporating new and cost-effective technologies that can be implemented using wireless communication systems, putting these tools into the hands of users even if the storage areas are in far away places. The promise of these sensor systems could provide an enhanced safeguard to agricultural products, saving significant investments throughout the supply chain.
