Saperda tridentata (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), the elm borer, is native to North America but has been intercepted in Europe where it could potentially become an invasive pest if established. Thus, we need survey tools that can effectively detect the presence of the elm borer at low densities. The pheromone chemistry of S. tridentata is unknown. To shed some light on this, we sampled volatiles from S. tridentata and identified two compounds emitted exclusively by males: 2-pentadecyloxyethanol (PDE), and heneicosane. We tested the effects of these compounds on S. tridentata catches in green multiple funnel traps set in the mid-crown of American elm trees in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 2023, 2024 and 2025. In 2023, PDE-baited traps captured more males (but not females) than unbaited traps and heneicosane had no effect. In 2024, however, PDE had no effect on trap catches of either sex. In 2025, we conducted a factorial experiment testing the effects of PDE, ultra high-release (UHR) ethanol lures, and trap color on catch of elm borer, predicting that ethanol would enhance attraction to PDE. The results of the 2025 field study are still pending.
