We explored the transfer of Bt resistance between two agricultural
pests, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) and Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner),
(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by mating them in the lab. Our results
showed that hybrids had some Bt resistance, which decreased over
generations unless backcrossed with resistant H. zea. This indicates
that Bt resistance can spread among related pests and affect
multiple crops. Effective management of insect resistance is crucial
for maintaining the effectiveness of Bt technology in transgenic
crops. Understanding how resistance spreads can help develop
strategies to extend the life of Bt crops and ensure sustainable pest
management. This research highlights the need for continuous
monitoring and adaptable agricultural practices to address pest
resistance challenges. By proactively tackling these issues, crops
can be protected, ensuring the long-term productivity of agricultural
systems.
