Development of a sequential sampling plan for soybean gall midge

Soybean gall midge (Resseliella maxima) is one of the more recent significant pests to emerge in soybean in the Midwest United States. It is a stem-feeding cecidomyiid, first described in 2019, and as of 2024, it can be found in seven Midwest states. Larvae feed internally, usually near stem bases, and often cause lodging and death. These impacts are known to significantly affect yields, causing up to 100% yield loss along field edges and tapering off in severity towards the interior. One important milestone to inform field research and IPM plans is development of a sampling plan. A common framework is the sequential sampling plan, which incorporates density data collected during sampling to inform how many sample units need to be collected to reach suitable precision, providing ‘stop points’ which prevent over- or under-sampling. To develop a sequential sampling plan, we collected 131 samples consisting of 20-80 soybean plants from fields infested with R. maxima. Samples were collected from fields across four states (IA, MN, NE, SD) and four years (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024). The stems were then brought back to a laboratory and dissected to count R. maxima larvae in the stem. Taylor’s power law was used to determine that R. maxima has an aggregated spatial pattern, Green’s formula was used to develop model parameters, and finally the Resampling Validation of Sampling Plans (RVSP) software was used to create and validate a sequential sampling plan which will be discussed in this presentation.
