The introduction of Bt cotton ushered in a new era of insect management in the Southeastern US. In 1995, Alabama cotton farmers averaged nearly 8 insecticide applications for caterpillar pests, cosing over $74 per acre. The next year, Alabama farmers planted 77% of their acres in Bt varties and averaged less than one application per acre with costs around $1. This shift in the system has led to new insects that must be scouted and managed each week. This presentation will provide information on how Bt cotton has shaped IPM today and in the future.
