Outreach material to teach general audiences about insects

Effective outreach materials are essential for engaging the public with the science of entomology. These tools serve not only to increase scientific literacy but also to foster curiosity, encourage participation in citizen science, and improve the public’s ability to interpret and share entomological knowledge. However, educational resources tailored specifically to younger audiences—particularly high school students—remain underdeveloped and underutilized. This project aimed to develop and evaluate a suite of outreach tools designed to communicate core entomological concepts to high school learners. The curriculum targeted three foundational learning objectives: 1. Understanding basic insect anatomy 2. Distinguishing insects from non-insect arthropods 3. Identifying defining characteristics of major insect orders To meet these objectives, we created a series of tactile and visual learning aids, including anatomically accurate 3D-printed insect models, flat laminated 2D figures for classroom manipulation, and an interactive, student-friendly dichotomous key. These materials were tested in classroom and outreach settings to assess usability, engagement, and effectiveness in reinforcing core concepts. Initial feedback from educators and students suggests these tools enhance comprehension and retention of complex biological information, particularly for visual and hands-on learners. This project demonstrates how intentional design of outreach materials can significantly strengthen science communication and inspire the next generation of entomologists.
