Investigating the influence of fruit dwelling microbes on mosquito attraction

Microbial odors are essential for attracting mosquitoes to hosts and oviposition sites, yet their involvement in mosquito attraction to nectar sources remains poorly understood. Nectar sources are vital for mosquito survival—they extend adult lifespan, shorten the gonotrophic cycle, and serve as the sole source of nutrition for adult males. Flowers and fruits, which often harbor abundant microbial communities, emit volatiles that are known to attract a range of insects, including mosquitoes. However, the specific microbes and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with nectar sources that contribute to mosquito attraction have not been thoroughly characterized. In this study, we aim to (1) characterize the microbial community present on the surface of Mangifera indica (mango), (2) assess the behavioral responses of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to selected microbial isolates, and (3) analyze the VOC profiles of attractive microbial communities. Additionally, we will investigate how the availability of specific nutrients influences microbial VOC production and modulates mosquito behavior, potentially serving as a proxy signal for nutrient presence—such as sugars. By identifying key microbially produced VOCs and elucidating plant–microbe–mosquito interactions, our work can enhance the understanding of ecologically relevant attractants and inform the development of novel vector control strategies.
