The role of community science for urban farm insect monitoring and public engagement

Agriculture has long been a part of the urban landscape, from gardens to small scale farms. In recent decades, interest in producing food in cities has grown dramatically, with an estimated 30% of the global urban population engaged in some form of food production. Growers need monitoring information on a variety of local insects from pests to beneficials and pollinators, but they also have a farm to run. Community, or citizen, science is one way to not only monitor urban farm insects but also engage the local community with local agriculture. Here we discuss the various community science web platforms and programs briefly explaining their education and science missions as they relate to precision agriculture. We hope to connect growers with community members to illustrate the economic and ecosystem value of urban agriculture and engage more citizens with the topics of food production, security, and justice in their communities
